Organizers awarded more grants Thursday. Twenty-five groups received $10,000 awards and one group earned a $25,000 grant: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren.
“I cannot tell you how humbled we are to be here with all of you. Those of you that are generous, kind, take care of people that are in need,” said organization member state rep. Eddie Day Pashinski, D-121, Wilkes-Barre. “We started this project — well, actually it started in 2014, when I brought four grandparents to Harrisburg to have them tell their story about what it was like to take care of their grandchildren when they saw their own children who were addicted with alcohol or opioids, who could no longer take care of those kids.”
The stories he heard were heart-breaking, Pashinski said. The state legislature passed bills to help grandparents in that situation, but more work was needed. Pashinski and others created a group to help.
“It’s our honor to be here. Thank you very much,” he said.
